How to Become Prepared For Emergency

By Andy Baromm

People always hope for positive things to happen in their lives but preparing for what may happen should be treated seriously more than just hoping for things to work out. Unfortunate events such as catastrophes, disasters as well as shortage of necessities like water and electricity may happen unexpectedly. But with an emergency kit prepared, you can protect your family if the need arises.

By now, most of us know that preparations should include the basics of water, non-perishable foods, candles and matches, and such. In most emergencies you should be able to stay in your home. Three days is really the minimum you should prepare for in case of a disaster. It is a good idea to put some emergency items inside your vehicle or at your work so that you can have higher chances of obtaining these things when unfortunate situations occur.

The first step in emergency preparedness it to purchase a reliable emergency kit for yourself and your family. Though emergency officers can be very helpful in the event of a disaster, they may not able to help because of too many people needing assistance. Moreover, keep in mind that roads and buildings may become dangerous to use following these unfortunate events. Also, expect banks, public utilities and grocery stores to close.

Emergency Things To Secure

Flashlights and radios are a must to have during these unfortunate events. Make sure to prepare them with their appropriate batteries. If possible, choose batteries that are self-charging. Naturally, you cannot go without a First aid kit and essential medicines. Expect that you will be sleeping in colder places during evacuation. Thus, you would be needing sleeping bags or blankets. And don't forget toilet paper and large garbage bags for your emergency toilet. For pet lovers, make sure that you do not forget pet foods along with your emergency kit.

On the top of your list, water should be prioritized first. You need to consider the fact that you need water for different things. You need it for drinking, at least 3 litres per person, per day. Don't forget the can opener for canned items. And ensure that you check and replace food and water every twelve months.

Make a Plan for you and your Family

Emergency planning is always necessary for every household in preparation for an unexpected emergency. It is better for the whole family to discuss the meeting places, communication method and how to see each other once an unexpected disaster happens. You never know if you'll be able to be together when disaster strikes.

Write your plan and keep it in a place that you can easily remember in times of need. Also, make sure that you have photocopies of this plan in your car, at your workplace and in the place near your phone.

A drawing of your floor plan showing all exits of your house is also an excellent idea. You have to identify which main exit route and the alternative routes you have to set. For those who live in an apartment, using the stairs for emergency should be advised. Be able to identify which route is safer and more accessible to use when evacuating from your neighborhood in a hurry.

Look for Safe Meeting Places

You have to look for the places where it is safe for you and your family to stay when evacuating. Use a water-resistant package to protect your emergency items inside your shelter during rains. What matters the most is that you and your family have planned your appropriate steps instead of during a confusing time like a disaster. Emergency planning and preparation will ensure nothing but safety for you and for your family in times of a disaster.
